Fixing the Criminal Justice System; Topics for Debate

By Lance Winslow The criminal justice system in the United States needs fixing there is no doubt about it, but the system is so huge and so many interconnected problems where does one start? Well an online think tank has recently taken up this subject actually and a few of the members have identified areas, which could be worked on first. One online think tank member stated; Additionally, laws need to be reformed in many areas. This is an entire discussion in and of its self and is too big for this little missive. Suffice to say that there is a LOT of work to be done in this area. Indeed; Red magic marker committees in every sector of law. But the lawyers will fight it, you would be disrupting their income and extortion fees and they will get downright hostile. The lawyers and lobbyists after all are generally on the committees, which come up with the laws in the first place? The think tank member agreed and further stated; Then the criminal justice system needs reforming - it is set up as an adversarial system that was intended to be weighted towards the defendant, but has shifted to favor the prosecution in all cases. Oh you mean that little bit about; you are assumed innocent until proven guilty? part? Yah well, indeed good point; I think from what I have heard I agree with your summation about the public defenders. I tend to disagree that a poor person who commits a crime is justified especially in justification of violent acts such as the example of the Crime and Punishment scenario. Integrity should be the same for all classes of citizens. Although under certain circumstances we should take the stealing for food issues into consideration. Perhaps you have considered issues, which are wrong with the criminal justice system and have potentially good ideas to straightening things out? If so they would surely be of interest indeed. Consider all this in 2006. "Lance Winslow" - Online Think Tank forum board. Health & Fitness With Homeopathy

By Nisha Surana Health & Fitness Homeopathy is so rich in remedial agents that often its practitioners tend to rely on their drugs alone, and to disregard hygiene and other adjuvants to cure. Especially do they fail to work out diets in detail for their patients. It is essential that they bother to do this for a number of reasons. In the first place, for the psycological effect upon the patient. Patients want to feel that every scientific care is being given them, and that (he doctor takes flattering pains with them; and they need something to do, a call to active co-operation on their part. Especially is this the last case when the actual remedy administration is in so pleasant, simple and sparse a form as Homeopathy prescribes. In the second place, without any drug of any kind, diet can do wonders for many types of cases as modern medicine so ably demonstrates. Let us consider, for instance, the value without any drug, of strict diets in such diseases as: Diabetes, nephritis, high blood pressure, renal colic and the uric add diabetes, arthritis, gall-stones and jaundice, gastric and duodenal ulcer, mucous colitis, visceroptosis, constipation, obesity, and last, but by no means least, tuberculosis and cancer. Every Homeopathic physician must be grounded in the classical dietary treatments; must know w.hen to give a diabetic the Newburg high-fat diet; and the difference between diets for nephritics and nephtotics; must enforce pure-free diets on the chronic renal colics; must be conversant with the Lippe diet for ulcer; and the LaheyJordan diet for mucous colitis (with its cream of wheat and celery, whose roughage combined with the concomitant rest prescribed does such wonders in those obstinate cases). The physician must know how to influence acidity; strong urine, asthma and eczema by dietary means. It is good training for us, and a helpful method of experimental control of our remedies, to start chronic patients who have some one of the above mentioned diagnoses, on diet and regimen plus Sac. lac. without any remedy, and see how far you can improve their condition .. Thus do we learn what scientific common sense will, and will not, do for us. Meanwhile you are getting closer to the patient's true similum, and can give it in prepared ground, with startling and enlightening effect. Diet can often replace the use of drugs a valuable help for the Homeopath. Take a patient who has been 'living' on soda bicarbonate for years. Teach them that soda, chemically alkaline, produces acid, physiologically, in the stomach, and train them to substitute lemon juice and the citrous fruits in general, and watch. You will be amazed that so simple a means will work so well. Meanwhile the soda intoxication symptoms will pass off, and your case values will begin to be unravelled. The physician must also at the onset remove articles of diet and diet habits of eating which hold the patient back from cure, and which cover the spoor on the trail to a 'totality', and therefore to subsequent healthful progress. He learns in this quest the idiosyncrasies to food on t.he part of the patient. These, as every Homeopath knows, are of great help and import. In this connection there is a wise rule: Chronic cases should not eat to excess that which they especially crave, whereas acute patients may-and should-eat largely of what they crave, if the craving comes on with the illness. The most extraordinary lapses from classical procedure shmv admirable results when this rule is followed, But, be sure that it is a true craving, unusual, individualizing the patient's reaction to the (so-called) acute disease. The craving for and aversIons. to food in chronics will, of course, give you sound generals for your hierarchy of symptoms. If, in chronic cases the remedy is given, it will, little by little, enable the patient to assimilate that food which he craved, at the same time, quite reasonably, modifying the craving. For example, I have an Argentum nitricum patient who craved sugar and was ill from it, and who, under Arg. nit. no longer craves it, but can 'Catch it with impunity. Similarly, I have a Calcare!t child, who, after Calc., ceased craving chalk and indigestibles and can assimilate lime from the food. In connection with being made ill by specific articles of food several interesting points arise: Try at first to see whether it is a combination of foods which disagree, or the one given element of diet. A wise professor once told me that almost anyone could eat almost anything if they ate it by itself. Next in the case of certain. acids, try giving cream cheese or cottage cheese with them. For instance, those with whom strawberries disagree, can often take stnnvbcrrics if cream cheese is eaten at the same time; and similarly with tomatoes. This also applies to shellfish in some paticncs. Beware the combinations of acids and sugars, starches with meat, III people with delicate digestions. Buttermilk will often so alter the colon's 110ra and fauna tbat putrefaction is regulated and much elll be digested which hitherto did not agree. A famous German Homeopath, Dr. Schlegel the elder, told me that if everyone would drink buttermilk die race would profit enormously, and if they would add honey (formic acid) and radishes (which are anti-uric-acid) even more trouble ,would be saved. Remember' that onions help keep blood pressure down (the excitable Italians with their garlic and onions rarely have hypertension.) In idiosyncrasies of preference rather than actual agrravations, ingenuity will save much trouble. Your child or patient who will not take milk may enjoy it if vichy or seltzer be added, or if milk and cream are mixed' and half with ginger ale or sarsaparilla. Or the difference between hot and cold milk may change the dislike. Those needing iron who claim cabbage gives them gas can often take raw cabbage with sour cream dressing. Spinach pureed with egg chopped on it will tempt the anti-green child. Cider and raw apples are marvelous for thinning the arthritic patient. Brown sugar, molasses, maple syrup and honey will not haim him as other sweets will. These hints may seem feminine and trivial, but I assure you, they work. I hope the discussion of this paper will provoke much more lore in this line. There is another sphere where diet aids materially in cleansing the system. We have mentioned buttermilk and lemon juice. White of egg, with lemon or orange juice makes a detoxifying liver wash for the bilious. The egg albumon forms albuminates with t.he poisons wbich accumulate in the liver. Tea made from red clover blossoms and drunk, two quarts daily, helps the cancer patients and appears to cleanse the system. (An old German ad;u.t1allt). So far we have not even mentioned the relationship between certain foods and the best action of our remedies. But surely you all know these symbioses and antagonisms. For example, Aconite and acids do not agree, coffee antidotes the action of Nux vomica. These relationships are legion and can be found in Clarke's Dictionary of Materia Medica and in many other of our classics, under the separate remedies. In Certain theoretical problems of enormous interest to me come up under this subject. For instance, we use articles of food as remedies. What reaction, if any, may these have on patients sensitive to them, even in the crude, comestible form? And vice versa, can we aid the suitable remedy by giving its crude counterpart as a food simultaneouslv? Furthermore, should we not make and prove the whole range of vegetables, fruits and nutriti~e articles, so that we find a patient with an idiosyncrasy to something we can compare his case with the proving of the offending food and. see whether it may not fit and aid? These foods should be proven on tho~e with a sensitivity to them. For instance, I should prove egg-plant, our friend, Dr. Roberts, has proved tomato, and a patient of mine, who is violently ill from even a dish of red pepper lurking in the soup-though he has plenty in his disposition-would make an admirable prover of Capsicum. These last considerations are offered to you as 'articles of diet'. Think them over digest them, and give the society a valuable and full discussion of this too often neglected phase of concomitant Homeopathy. Countdown To A New You!

By Dawn Lloyd As the New Year quickly approaches, one of the resolutions topping lists again this year will be to lose weight and get fit. So many folks will start out gung-ho, completely devoted to the fitness cause, yet fizzle out before spring approaches. What is the key to being successful in a weight loss journey? Noone should make a life-altering decision without research, thought and preparation. Losing weight and becoming fit is just that a change of lifestyle. Set a starting date and use the time prior to prepare yourself! 1) Start planning your weight loss strategy several weeks in advance. Research various diets and exercise programs. Join online support groups. Decide which plans YOU can adhere to and have this decision made prior to your start date. Youll want to begin collecting recipes and building a support team of friends with similar weight loss goals. Pick up a few fitness magazines and start flipping through them to determine which ones you find motivational. A few popular womens magazines to try are: Fitness, Shape and Oxygen. 2) Choose your goals, but make them attainable. A fixation completely on scale weight is not necessarily the best strategy. Youve heard it time and time again and it is true: muscle weighs more than fat! Focus on measurements, body fat percentage, clothing size or even an athletic goal. Set mini-goals as well its much easier to stay motivated as you are reaching each individual goal than waiting to reach one distant goal. Be sure to allow non-food rewards as you reach each goal, and put these in writing to remind you what you are working towards. Treat yourself to a manicure/pedicure, massage, new lingerie, slinky dress or other perks. 3) Document your Before self. Have a friend or spouse help you take your beginning measurements. At a minimum, measure chest, waist, upper arm and upper thigh. Be sure to note your body fat percentage as well. Most gyms will perform this measurement for a small fee and it is vital to track your body fat for a more accurate portrayal of your true progress. Take photos of yourself in a swimsuit or sports bra and shorts. These will be extremely important to compare along the way and show just how much progress you are truly making! 4) Find the perfect body and plaster it everywhere! Perhaps you have a photo of you from your youth. Maybe there is a fitness model that has the shape youd like to have. Again, be realistic about the body you choose, but once you find a body type that fits your desires, post pictures all around you as reminders. Tear out a magazine ad and tape it to the refrigerator. Find that pre-baby picture of you in a bikini and post it on your computer monitor. Use these as constant reminders of what you are trying to accomplish. 5) Join a gym or pick up the necessary equipment to workout at home. Joining a gym can be strong motivation to stay on track with your fitness plan for several reasons. The most obvious is that you have to watch that monthly fee come out of your checking account for at least a year in most cases! If you are going to be paying for it, you might as well use it, right? There are such a variety of exercise opportunities at a fitness center that you will be less likely to become bored. Most offer free weights, weight machines, aerobic classes, and a variety of cardio machines, at a minimum. Many also offer personal training instruction and swimming pools. Over time, you will probably form friendships that will help motivate you to continue working out regularly. 6) Accustom yourself to writing down everything that you eat, good or bad. You may be telling yourself that you really arent eating that bad, but cant figure out why your weight loss is slow or non-existent. Pick up an inexpensive food scale and begin weighing and measuring your portions. Quite often, looking at it on paper, you can pinpoint your problem times and trigger foods. There are many sites online that offer food journaling, including FitDay.com. 7) Begin weaning yourself from your bad habits early. Living a healthy lifestyle will most likely be enough of a shock that you will not want to go cold turkey with all the changes at once. Use the weeks prior to your goal date to begin making subtle changes. If you are a heavy soda or coffee drinker, begin cutting back one or two a day, then as you adjust, cut out another, etc. If you are a chocolate fanatic, begin cutting back or perhaps replacing with sugar-free items. Teach yourself to eat five or six smaller meals throughout the day instead of the normal three large ones. This will help keep your blood sugar stable, preventing cravings and deterring binge eating. Most importantly, take this time to prepare yourself mentally. Use the weeks leading up to your starting date to make sure you are emotionally ready. Look at it as the last opportunity to eat certain foods without guilt. A healthy and fit lifestyle change is not going to be easy, but it will be less difficult if you have convinced yourself mentally that you are prepared and that you will be successful. Bipolar and Discrimination

By Neal Sutz Bipolar is certainly a misunderstood illness. Even those of us who deal with it everyday have a hard time understanding bipolar disorder. As the old saying goes People mock what they dont understand. Just because you suffer from Bipolar Disorder doesnt mean you have to let yourself get pushed around. Stick up for yourself. There are people to help you if youve been discriminated against. Heres a personal illustration. Two and a half years ago, I went to be an audience member in the Dr. Phil Show. Like everyone else who was there, I had called in advance and received free tickets. All I had to do was come to Paramount Studios a couple of hours before the taping of the show, wait in line, go through security and then go in for the taping. Well, I followed all the instructions, waited in line for over an hour and then started to enter the studio with all the other potential audience members. Once through security, I was handed a piece of paper to read and sign. I figured it was your standard television release and sat down and started to read it. That was when things got heavy. Item #2 on the release read something to the effect of, I certify that I am not under psychiatric care and do not suffer from a mental illness. Needless to say, I was shocked! To be an audience member in the Dr. Phil show, it seemed, I had to deny the fact that I have bipolar disorder. How ironic, I thought, that TVs most renowned psychologist wouldnt let people in his audience who had legitimate psychological troubles. Being greatly disappointed, I asked to speak with a staff member to discuss this issue. Ten minutes or so later, I was approached by a Dr. Phil staff member who didnt identify herself to me. I explained to her that I had been successfully treated for bipolar disorder, that I took medication and that I was not comfortable signing a piece of paper that denied my condition. After several minutes of discussion, she said the following. If I would initial #2, she would initial #2 and then we would both sign the bottom of the studio audience release. Then, she said, I could go into the show as an audience member, but that I would not be allowed to speak with Dr. Phil, to ask questions, or to in any way participate in the taping of the show. Needless to say, I was appalled. I told her I was not comfortable denying my condition and also not comfortable signing the release and going into the show without the same rights as every other potential audience member. This was my first circumstance experiencing the great discrimination that those of us with mental illness have to bear every day of our lives. I took the studio audience release, folded it up, put it in my pocket and proceeded to leave the studio. There was no way I was going to hide my condition to appease the legalities of the Dr. Phil Show. Months later, I filed a lawsuit in Federal District Court, claiming violations under the American Disabilities Act of 1990, Title III, Section 32. They had no right to demand that I disclosed my mental illness. And they had no right to refuse me equal access to the show, as they offered to every other audience member. Before we went to court, the case settled. They took out the discriminatory wording from the studio audience release and, at my request, put a disclaimer on the show that viewers can see at the end of each televised episode. The disclaimer reads to the effect of, that the show is for entertainment purposes only and that the advice that Dr. Phil gives is intended for those on stage alone and not for the viewing audience. Ive told you this story as an example. If ever you are asked to disclose your mental illness, and discriminated against because of that, fight for your rights. File a lawsuit, get assertive about it and show those who are discriminating that discrimination against persons with mental illness will simply not be tolerated. What Does Multimedia Mean and How Can it Help My Business?

By J Lewis The term multimedia simply means many ways of communicating. Media is the plural for medium and the word originated in the field of advertising over 50 years ago. The following are all examples of multimedia, they all relate to each other and are powerful tools in the advertising industry. Graphic Design for print and web Web Design Web Development Interactive CD ROM and DVD How can it help in marketing your company and why should you be investing in the skills of a professional graphic designer? In an era where we are constantly exposed to imagery and brands, having a strong corporate identity is a major factor for helping to market a companies products or services. Branding or corporate identity usually consists of a logotype, slogan and its associated imagery and colours. Unfortunately there are no requirements for qualifications in order to set up as a web design, graphic design or multimedia specialist and I believe that this has had a detrimental effect on the industry as a whole. There are now numerous companies out there that have set up as design agencies and who offer poor quality services to their clients. This is particularly evident in the web design industry where it is all too easy for individuals to buy the many templates that are available and pass these off to their clients as web design. Worst still is that this poor quality work doesnt come cheap as many individuals seek to cash in on peoples lack of understanding of the multimedia industry. An important part of your marketing and branding will be your company logo so when choosing and designing a logo, make sure you have a reasonable budget and that you seek professional help. Avoid the temptation to 'knock something up on the computer' yourself or to ask a friend or colleague to have a go. Good graphic design need not cost a fortune but bad design will have a huge impact on how your business will be perceived. Most logos are instantly forgettable but you have the opportunity to develop something memorable if you spend time and money at the outset. Look at the big brand names that you are exposed to every day of your life and you will see just how much they invest in and value their company branding and logo to the extent that they will fiercely defend their branding with expensive lawsuits if necessary. When planning your logo, you should develop a simple written brief for the project and commission a professional graphic designer. A logo needs to be distinctive and not too much like the logo of other, well known organisations? It needs to work well with the logo of any of your major partners or funders if you have any? The new logo should work well across a range of applications ie. on a conference banner, business card, letterheads, brochures, website etc.? It also needs to look good when reproduced on a basic photocopier? For your logo colour, it might be better to avoid particular tones of colour associated with say political parties. Limiting the range of colours will help to keep costs of reproduction down. For logo typeface, limit the number of typefaces for headlines and body text and choose modern, clean typefaces. John Lewis is a multimedia designer who specialises in producing interactive CD Rom, original graphic design Edinburgh and web design Scotland. Approaches to Care in Physician Assisted Suicide

By Sam Oliver There is a growing interest in suicide. When people start looking for more information about suicide, you'll be in a position to meet their needs. This article is a brief description of much information on this subject. Let's start with 3 levels to discern in the act of euthanasia. There are three levels to discern in the act of euthanasia: 1. One is a patient who is comatose or brain dead. In these cases the doctor is asked to pull the plug, or remove the patient from mechanical life support. These cases are generally not challenged by the general public. It is an act of withdrawing or withholding necessary mechanisms used to sustain a life that cannot sustain itself. It is here that the recognition of ones personality is gone and the shell of a body is all that remains. 2. Another act of euthanasia involves the use of morphine to hospitalized patients in the painful final stages of her or his life with diseases such as cancer and AIDS. 3. The last category of euthanasia is patients in relatively good health and at the beginning of a terminal illness wishing to end their lives. Such cases as Alzheimers and Cancer preclude patients to want information on PAS. This is the most controversial of the three issues involved in euthanasia. Euthanasia originated from the Greek language meaning good death. It is the intentional termination of a life by another person capable of doing so by the request of the person wanting to die. Here are a few terms that one needs to know in PAS that define actions taking place. Passive Euthanasia is the hastening of a death by means of altering some form of support and letting nature take its course. This can include; removing life support equipment, stopping medical treatment or procedures, stopping food and water consumption which leads to dehydration or starving to death, and withholding CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation). The most common use of PAS is to give patients large doses of morphine to control pain. It is most likely that the pain relief will suppress respiration and cause death earlier than it would have otherwise happened. This is also done on patients who are in a persistive vegetative state or patients not able to regain consciousness due to brain damage. Active Euthanasia is the use of intentional means to cause the death of a person through a direct action. Dr. Jack Kevorkian, a Michigan physician made this well known in 1998 with a patient who had ALS (Lou Gehrigs Disease). His patient was afraid of the long suffering involved in ALS and wanted to die a quick and painless death. Dr. Kevorkian injected controlled substances into this patient and caused death. Kevorkian was charged with 1st degree murder, but the jury found him guilty of 2nd degree murder in March of 1999. Physician Assisted Suicide is the provision of information or means to a dying patient with the intent to commit suicide. Involuntary Euthanasia is the ending of a life without a patient clearly requesting it. There are many reasons why patients want to utilize PAS. Some are simply clinically depressed, of which, ones illness has brought on or ones emotional and mental processing of their illness has led to suffering in ways beyond the body. Others live in chronic pain-due to lack of healthcare coverage or means to obtain medication. This later group would rather die early and not incur medical expenses on those they leave behind. A serious disorder or disease such as: ASL, Huntingtons Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, AIDS, Alzheimers, etc. are just some of the illnesses people would rather avoid losing their independence and finances over. In some ways, this gives people a feeling of control over the process of their lives. The Counter Offer: The Perils Of Accepting One

By Carl Mueller Accepting a counter offer is one of the biggest mistakes that you can make during your career. To be clear, a counter offer is when you try to resign from your current employer after accepting another job elsewhere and your current employer tries to keep you by offering you (typically) more money, a better job, more benefits, more vacation, etc. In other words, they try to bribe you to stay. The question you need to ask yourself is if you were worth more money, deserved a better job, deserved more benefits or deserved more vacation, why did you need to resign before you employer realized you deserved it? Hmmmm... To accept a counter offer says several things: It says that you werent really looking for a job. You were simply looking for a raise because thats basically what a counter offer is. Accepting a counter offer says that you can be bought. If you accept one, you have shown that you can be bought. Its just a matter of how much its going to cost your employer. Accepting a counter offer tells your current employer that you were looking for a new job so chances are if you were looking before, you will look again once a better job opportunity surfaces elsewhere. Accepting a counter offer shows that you are not a loyal person. It shows your current employer that you will renege on a deal in exchange for more money. Not exactly a trait employers are looking for in their employees Studies have shown that people who accept a counter offer: Typically end up leaving the company anyways within 6 months of accepting a counter offer. Burn their bridges with both their employer and with the company they accepted the new job with and then turned down. Could end up getting fired by their employer once the employer finds someone suitable to replace them. In other words, your employer only gave you a counter offer to keep you in place until they found someone suitable to replace you! Burn their bridges with the recruiter they used to find the position, if they were using one. Recruiters HATE when a person accepts a new job with their clientand then change their mind and accept a counter offer. When a recruiter has to go to their client and let them know that the new employee they hired has changed their mind and that their search for a new employee has to start over again, you have pretty much guaranteed this recruiter will not work with you again. Especially if the recruiter loses this client as a result of you accepting a counter offer. Think about it: if the employer turned down a few other good candidates to offer you the job, they will be really angry about being spurned by you. If you accept a counter offer, I wouldnt expect to hear from the recruiter OR the company you turned down, ever again! Before you accept a counter offer, take a step back and think things through completely. Look at the job offer letter you have received and ensure it contains everything you were told it would contain. While considering the job offer letter and its contents, remind yourself why you decided to look for a new job (and accept it) in the first place. How does accepting a counter offer change the reasons you decided to look for a new job? Again, if you were worth the extra perks your current employer is offering you in the form of a counter offer, why did they wait until you told them you were leaving to offer it to you? It doesnt really make sense when you think about it, does it? Accepting a counter offer might look good in the short term, but it probably wont be long before you find yourself again looking for a new job if you choose to accept it. Move Bank Accounts with Ease

By Alexander Gordon Many of us have thought of moving our bank accounts at some point or the other but refrained to implement the idea to avoid troubles arising from such a shift. There is a lot of misconception among customers regarding shifting bank accounts. Many fear that the new bank would create troubles if they discovered that they do not posses quality credit histories or create hassles to transfer accounts. However, this is not so. In fact, changing accounts is very simple and is a hassle-free process; provided you are sure that you want a shift for justified reasons. Here are some facts that will help you to take you through the process of moving your bank accounts. Things to Consider Before Moving: Before you move you bank account, be sure of such a move. It is important that you have justified reasons for moving the account; otherwise, you end up spending time in vain. If you are considering moving because you had a problem with the current bank, try to find a solution by calling up the bank. If the bank has made a mistake and admits it, and is ready to rectify it, you may not move. If not, many banks would welcome you. Before moving to any particular bank, check what services they are offering. You may compare these services with those of some other banks and your current bank. Find out what are the various systems of service access that the bank is providing you. Match their service levels with your requirements. Choose a Bank for Moving: After doing a comparative analysis of the services and products offered by various banks, you may choose a particular bank to move. Once, you have decided, you may establish contacts with the banks local branch and talk to a customer executive. Talk to him about various aspects of your move and mention why you are moving. This will give the bank an idea of what kind of service level you are expecting from them. Make sure that the branch is near your house or office for banking conveniently. It is advisable that meet the banks personnel personally, to clarify your case with them.
